The important elements of a good volley include:

• Moving to intercept the ball as close to the net as possible.
  
• Making contact with a punching motion with little or no backswing.
  
• Emphasis on placement rather than power.
  
• Volleys below the net should be considered defensive,
  use the racquet as a trampoline to guide the ball over the net at
  a low trajectory.
