What Role Does Tennis Play in Your Life?

Many times I question my students regarding the role tennis plays in his/her life. To me, tennis is an escape from the duties and responsibilities of life. It’s my time to enjoy myself. It’s enjoyable hitting the ball and playing with my friends. Yes, it’s great to win the match but just getting a good workout is gratifying, as long as I gave it my best.

Unfortunately, I don’t always see this type of excitement from my students. Sometimes, they drag themselves on the court and look as if they would rather be someplace else. I can’t understand what’s going on with them. Why are they here, if they are not ready to work and improve their game?

Think about these questions for a moment. What does tennis mean to you? How would you feel, if you were injured and could never play again?  If you relate playing tennis to doing your homework, making your bed, and bringing out the garbage, then it is time to quit the game. To me, tennis ranks with going to the beach, driving my car, listening to my favorite music, winning the lottery, etc.

Take the time to re-evaluate your feelings towards tennis.  Maybe, it’s time to quit the game or hopefully, it might be time for you to appreciate and relish the opportunity to play that your parents have given you.
