Improving Your Serve

Improving your serve.

There are two major ways to improve your serve.

  1. Improving your toss

Many players do not understand how to control their toss or where to place it.  The idea is too place the ball in your hand and gently cup it using the top of your fingers. A good way to start your motion is to place the ball against the throat of the racquet approximately in front of your “belly button” and then raise your arm in a controlled motion.  You cup the ball until your arm is fully extended and then release the ball. The palm of your hand should be facing the area you wanted the ball to go.

  1. Use a spin serve and make sure to hit up.

All your thoughts should be on tossing the ball in an area that will allow you to hit the ball up when striking it.  The spin serve is the first serve that players should attempt to achieve. In order to hit a spin serve, your toss should be slightly out to your right (right hand players) but not too far in front of you. Then hit the ball by reaching up and snapping your wrist to drive the ball upward. The arm should be fully extended before snapping the wrist or you have not tossed the ball high enough. The ball should climb first before descending into the opponent’s service box.
