Strategies for Baseline Player
20 Jan 2005
- Stay 2- 3 feet behind the baseline so that you can step into your shot, don’t let yourself get jammed up by letting the ball land at your feet.
- When you are caught out of position and have to retrieve a shot hit deep into the corner on your side of the court. Don’t run at the ball. Instead run so that you will arrive 3-4 feet behind where the ball will hit. This will allow you to hit the ball before it lands a second time.
- Keep your returns deep.
- Try to set-up a pattern of your forehand to your opponent’s backhand.
- When on the run to retrieve a ball hit in the corner of the court consider lobbing.
- Hit most of your returns crosscourt. The net is 6 inches lower in the middle.
- When your opponent attacks the net, drive the ball down the lane rather than crosscourt. Most players freeze in the middle of the court. If you have the capability you can also use slice to keep the ball low or hit a lob.
- When your opponent hits a ball that requires you to cross the baseline to hit, take this opportunity to change direction and hit the return into the open court.
