Seeing Opportunities and Making Defensive Shots

4 Jul 2006

A couple of my friends recently mentioned that many of the juniors they watch play do not “see the court” well under match conditions nor do they improvise when their opponents have made a forceful shot.  I found those comments to be interesting. When constructing a point be mindful of where you are hitting the ball.  Try to be unpredictable in your shot making. This will keep your opponent off balance and make him/her less likely to hit a winner and more likely to make an error from trying to hit too good of a shot under less than perfect conditions.  When chasing down a ball that is difficult to get try to use a shot that will buy you some time to get back into position. Use lobs when you are deep in the court and angled drop shots when you are racing to cover a short ball.
